Plot: When young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) and her mother go to live with her new stepfather on a rural military outpost during the Spanish Civil War, she finds herself in a world of unimaginable cruelty. Soon Ofelia finds the creatures of her imagination in which she used to escape have become a reality and she must battle them to save both her mother and herself. In the terrifying battle that ensues, Ofelia soon learns that innocence has a power that evil cannot imagine.

Plot: Recently widowed and well-to-do Laura Henderson needs a diversion to see her through war torn London. On a whim she buys the derelict Windmill theatre in the West End and persuades impresario Vivian Van Damm to run it. The two don't seem to get along at all. Although their idea of a non-stop revue is at first a success, other theatres begin to copy the idea and disaster looms. Laura suggests they put nudes in the show, but Van Damm points out that the Lord Chamberlain, who licenses live shows in Britain, is likely to have something to say about this. Luckily for Laura, she is friends with him.

Dangerous Living - Coming Out in the Developing World (2003)

Plot: A feature-length documentary that explores the immense changes that occurred for gays, lesbians and transgender people living in the Global South. In the last decade of the 20th Century, a new heightened visibility began spreading throughout the developing world and the battles between families, fundamentalist religions, and governments around sexual and gender identity had begun. But in the West, few people knew about this historic social upheaval, until 52 men on Cairo’s Queen Boat discothèque were arrested for crimes of debauchery. That explosive story focused attention to the lives and trials of gay people coming out in the developing world and the film chronicles those events.

Plot: This movie explores a love that develops between a woman and her sister in law, helped along by her new husband's neglect and infidelity, as well as her brother in law's religious preoccupation. In a society where this sort of love (read: lesbianism) is neither defined nor accepted, these women struggle to maintain their love in secret until finally, like the Goddess Sita, one must face the "trial by fire".

Rena Owen plays the beleaguered mother of two boys--one of whom is already in prison while the other contemplates membership in a gang--and a daughter whose potential is being smothered at home. Temuera Morrison gives an outstanding and sometimes shocking performance as the violent head of the household, more adept at keeping up his social stature within his community of friends than holding down a job. Black History Month Discussions

COMING IN FEBRUARY
In honor of Black History Month, the Stafford Library will be holding four DVD discussion groups on consecutive Thursday nights at 7pm.

The 79th Annual Academy Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, February 25th, 2007, on ABC channels. We'll be discussing two films that received Academy Awards in 2006, Crash and Hustle & Flow. Our other two discussion films, Akeelah & the Bee and Inside Man, have received a great deal of critical attention and may be among the 2007 Academy Award nominees announced on January 23rd, 2007. All of these films have performances by notable African American actors, and director Spike Lee has been nominated for Best Documentary (for Four Little Girls, 1997) and Best Original Screenplay (Do the Right Thing, 1989) in the past.

2/1 - Crash

...to Liz B. at Pop Goes the Library for talking up the DVD Discussion Group here. As a result, both PGtL and this very blog have gotten mentions in two cool places: Superpatron and Scrappy Librarian. Check them all out!

Another "thanks" goes out to Homewood Public Library Film Group for the inspiration to blog the OCL group. When I did a Google search, theirs was the only library group I found blogging. They also create beautiful brochures containing supporting information for film viewers. Kudos!

When people see a movie, they talk about it. Whether they loved it or hated it, whether it moved them or left them cold, whether they identified with a particular character, how they felt about the hero's victory or the villain's defeat.

The best movies have the ability to make us see things from a new perspective. They give us insight into our own lives and the lives of others. With this in mind, join us to share your views on some current movies that have stimulated conversations among viewers and critics alike.

We've chosen four films from the past year that have attracted widespread media attention, critical praise and film award consideration: Brokeback Mountain (discussion on 6/8), Transamerica (6/15), Capote (6/22) and The Dying Gaul (6/29).
